Special Project: 63rd Street Wireless Access

The 63rd Street Growth Commission’s WiFi project is one of the most exciting projects we currently have underway. As the first grass roots Wi-Fi installation effort in the United States, the project is attracting considerable publicity (visit our News section for related articles).

Photo of sign that advertises wi fi access at a small caféDesigned to establish “digital excellence” in our commercial district, the project is creating free wireless (Wi-Fi) “hot spots” along 63rd Street starting at Western Avenue and ending at Central Park. To do this, a Cisco 1300 wireless access point will be installed every two blocks that provides access to a business class internet account from COMCAST or RCN.

The project gives local businesses internet access for a nominal monthly charge. This allows business owners to provide free wireless access to their customers, communicate directly with anyone with internet access, and gain a new avenue for direct local marketing.

The project also provides free internet access to residents living in the immediate area. With resident access comes the opportunity for cost-effective internet marketing for local businesses.

Once Phase I is operating successfully, the Growth Commission’s plan is to expand the project, with the goal of providing access all the way to Cicero.
