Activating Business Potential in
Chicago's Southwest Business District
Special Project: Business Development Month
In 2009, the 63rd Street Growth Commission partnered with Saint Xavier University to host Business Development Month. Over the course of six weeks, 177 people attended networking events and educational workshops to build relationships and gain knowledge of business-related topics.
Business Development Month launched with an opening networking event followed by a series of four weekly workshops focused on business planning, avenues for obtaining financing, human resource practices for small business, and City of Chicago compliance. Not just for existing business owners, Business Development Month also served to guide the decision-making process for individuals considering a new business launch.
Completing the workshops gave participants a clearer understanding of how to manage their businesses and how to compete effectively in today’s business market.
“After 18 years, I was able to put together a business plan that will open up many doors.”
Gregg Harris (Yogo the Clown)
“I found the workshops to be very informative. I am grateful to the 63rd Street Growth Commission for arranging them. The speakers presented valuable information. They also shared many resources, which I can easily contact for additional information and to receive assistance.”
Veronica Zapata (Inner City Muslim Action Network)
Business Development Month closed with a final networking event that included a graduation ceremony for the 31 people who attended all four workshops.
“I attended the workshop and networked with other business-minded people and built business relationships. I left the workshop with more confidence, knowing there are business owners eager to share ideas and who have some of the same questions.”
Louvella Fears (Carebear Academy)
The 63rd Street Growth Commission wishes to acknowledge and thank Saint Xavier University for its financial support of the 2009 Business Development Month.
